How to Best Manage Your Yard in the Winter

October 17, 2020 by Shreve Services

With winter just around the corner, you may be realizing that you need to start making a plan for how to manage your yard. But where do you start? Here are three crucial things to remember to make sure your yard is well cared for during the winter season.

Remove Snow and Ice in Walking Areas

One of the first things you should think about when making a plan to care for your yard during winter is how you will remove snow and ice from walking areas. Snowy and icy front steps or sidewalks can be extremely dangerous. Even on days when the snow has seemed to melt, your steps may have a thin layer of carefully concealed slippery ice. Falling on ice can result in bad injuries.

To prevent these injuries, invest in good ice melt or salt. Ice melt or salt is sprinkled periodically over ice and reduces water’s freezing point. Basically, what this means is that the mixture of the salt with the ice results in a brine that can’t stay frozen at normal freezing temperatures.

Make it Pest Proof

In addition to planning your ice and snow removal, you should also figure out how to prevent pests from making your home their home. As colder temperatures develop, insects and rodents are less able to live comfortably outside.

As a result, they will seek shelter inside and around your home. Bird feeders, large piles of leaves, and stacks of wood left outside in your yard can attract rodents to your home. Identify these potential burrowing spots and eliminate them if possible. If not possible, check them routinely for pests.

Care for Your Lawn

Winter can seem to provide a break from the regular lawn routine maintained during the summer and fall months. However, while you won’t need to mow your lawn during the winter, there are still a few things you should do to maintain it.

Make sure to pick up any strewn debris, branches, or random toys. If left buried under a pile of snow, these items can damage your lawn. You should also consider fertilizing your lawn. This can help protect the lawn and supplement nutrients that are lost during these colder months.

Caring for your yard during wintertime can initially seem difficult. When the snow is everywhere, it’s important to make sure your yard is well taken care of. Start with these suggestions in order to best maintain your yard during winter months.
